Waiting for Warmer Water

I love the summer and I love to swim and what summertime means to me is open water swimming. Last summer I spent many an hour clocking up the kilometres in Lyttelton Harbour, Lake Pegasus, Akaroa Harbour, Lake Taupo and various lidos in NZ and Aussie. So right now I’m willing on warmer water, ready for the first open water dip of the season. Towards the end of last season I was approached by Real Swim Adventures and asked to create certificates for two of the swims that company organises during the Christchurch summer; The Quail Island Crossing and Around Quail Island.

There’s a real sense of exploration about these open water swims, so incorporating maps into the design seemed like a great way to convey this. I also thought about the beautiful calligraphy you can often get on certificates, so chose a typeface to be representative of this. I selected this typeface in particular as I love how the shape of waves are suggested in the negative space beneath the letter forms. I hope these certificates will be a nice memento for people to remind them of their open water achievements.
